On Ubi Soft's Boner For Politics

Jun. 1, 2021

If there’s one thing that’s ever constant, it’s Ubi’s absolute hard-on for shoving politics where it doesn’t belong. While fictional politics are hard if not impossible to avoid, equating a game to real life is rarely a good thing.

With the announcement of Ubi’s latest installment in the Far Cry series, they’ve also made a certain press statement that is questionable at best. Their “The Politics of Far Cry 6” news post is rather telling of the company’s current climate. Written by their “Narrative Director,” Navid Khavari leads with:

Our story is political.

Well no shit it is, because what isn’t political within Ubi nowadays? I certainly couldn’t say.

The news post continues to talks about “free-and-fair elections,” and “LGBTQ+ rights.” While perhaps not “problematic” by itself, having an official post practically scream out loud that the game is one giant real life political statement is.

I couldn’t care less (and yes, that’s how you use the phrase) about what grand statement a game wants to make about our real life political climate. Most likely, a majority of other people is probably in the same camp. We don’t want to be reminded of real life when we’re playing a game.

So, Ubi, you can take your “We are political, and we’re so totally hip and not at all capitalistic swines” and fuck off. Thanks.
